Where Conservation Becomes Culture. Where Hospitality Becomes Stewardship.

The Black River corridor — home to the oldest living trees in eastern North America
There are places on this earth that hold more memory than any archive. Rivers that have witnessed millennia. Trees that were ancient before empires rose and fell. The most meaningful investments do not build what is new — they protect what cannot be replaced.
Bhudevi is a regenerative hospitality and conservation venture rooted in the living landscapes of North Carolina. We acquire, restore, and steward land that matters — and we transform that stewardship into experiences that change how people belong to place.
We invite partners who see land not as asset, but as ancestor.
What Bhudevi Protects
Bhudevi exists to acquire, restore, and steward ecologically significant land along North Carolina’s Black River corridor — a landscape home to bald cypress trees dating back 2,624 years, among the oldest living organisms on Earth.
We transform these protected landscapes into regenerative hospitality experiences that honor the land, sustain local farming communities, and preserve cultural heritage that stretches back centuries. Every acre under Bhudevi’s care becomes a living classroom, a sanctuary, and a source of livelihood for the people who have always called this land home.
This is not eco-tourism. This is not a resort wrapped in green language.
This is land stewardship expressed through belonging.
The Four Pillars of Bhudevi
Everything we build rests on four commitments. They are not marketing categories. They are the bones of the work.
🌿 LAND “Every acre tells a story.” Bhudevi acquires and protects ecologically significant land — old-growth corridors, riparian buffers, and biodiverse habitats that anchor entire ecosystems. We don’t develop land. We listen to it. We ask what it needs. And then we become its voice.
🏺 CULTURE “Heritage is not decoration.” We preserve and celebrate the living traditions — food, craft, story, ceremony — of the communities rooted in the landscapes we steward. Culture is not a program or an exhibit. Culture is the soul of place. Without it, conservation is only silence.
🤝 COMMUNITY “Sovereignty begins at the table.” Bhudevi bridges organic farmers, local artisans, and hospitality partners into reciprocal ecosystems. We invest in the people who have always cared for the land — because stewardship without community is just another form of extraction.
🏡 HOSPITALITY “To host is to honor.” Our guest experiences are not escapes from the world — they are immersions into it. Every stay regenerates: the land, the local economy, the guest’s relationship to place. When you leave Bhudevi, you carry something back that you didn’t know you’d lost.
The Black River — Sacred Ground

Bald cypress trees along the Black River — living witnesses to 2,600 years of history
In the dark, tannin-stained waters of southeastern North Carolina, there stands a forest that predates the Roman Empire. The Black River’s bald cypress trees have been confirmed at over 2,624 years old — making them among the oldest known living organisms on Earth. They have survived ice ages, hurricanes, and centuries of human encroachment. They are still growing.
Yet despite their profound ecological and scientific significance, much of the surrounding corridor remains unprotected. Logging, residential development, and agricultural runoff continue to threaten the very water systems that sustain these ancient sentinels.
Bhudevi’s land acquisition strategy targets parcels along the Black River corridor for permanent conservation — building a network of protected land that connects fragmented habitats and restores ecological integrity to one of the most important riparian systems in eastern North America.
The vision is not a nature preserve behind a fence. It is a living landscape anchored by regenerative hospitality — where guests don’t just visit nature, they participate in its restoration. Where every meal is sourced from the farms that buffer the forest. Where every story told around a table carries the weight of the river’s long memory.
This region holds deep cultural roots — Indigenous, African-American, and colonial heritage layers that deserve preservation alongside the ecology. The land remembers all of them. So will we.
The Botanical Defense Program
Bhudevi’s signature conservation initiative is not a single project. It is a system of care — five interconnected commitments that protect the land from root to canopy.
Habitat Restoration — Replanting native species corridors to reconnect fragmented ecosystems along the Black River. We work with the land’s original palette — the grasses, understory shrubs, and canopy species that belong here — to rebuild what was broken.
Conservation Buffer Zones — Establishing protected perimeters around old-growth stands to shield them from agricultural and industrial encroachment. These buffers are not borders. They are breathing room.
Heritage Seed Banking — Preserving heirloom and indigenous plant varieties in partnership with local farmers and botanical institutions. Every seed is a story. Every variety lost is a language that goes silent.
Healing Traditions — Reviving traditional herbal medicine practices — jamu, folk herbalism, root work — as living cultural heritage tied to the land. The plants that heal us are the same plants we are called to protect.
Ecological Monitoring — Long-term biodiversity tracking and water quality assessment to measure restoration impact. What we measure, we can defend. What we document, we can teach.
“The Botanical Defense Program is not a project. It is a promise — to the trees that were here before us and the generations that will come after.”
Why Partner With Bhudevi
Some protect land with fences. Some protect it with lawyers. We protect it with purpose — and we invite partners who understand that the deepest returns are measured in centuries, not quarters.
Legacy Asset Protected land appreciates in ecological, cultural, and financial value simultaneously. Conservation easements provide meaningful tax advantages while ensuring permanent stewardship. This is not speculative. This is land that has proven its worth over millennia.
Dual Revenue Model Bhudevi generates revenue through regenerative hospitality experiences — retreats, workshops, cultural immersions, and farm-to-table gatherings — alongside consulting services for aligned properties worldwide. The model sustains the mission. The mission sustains the land.
Aligned Capital This is not venture capital territory. Bhudevi seeks partners who measure return in acres protected, communities strengthened, and cultures preserved — alongside sustainable financial performance. We believe capital can be a force for permanence, not extraction.
Proven Stewardship Model Bhudevi’s founder brings over 25 years of global experience across four continents in hospitality, community development, and cultural preservation. This is not a concept. This is a life’s work reaching its fullest expression.
The Founder — Arlette Marie Gabrielle Ottow

The landscapes that inspire Bhudevi’s mission — where agriculture and ecology become one
Arlette Ottow is the founder of Bhudevi — a regenerative hospitality consultancy and conservation venture rooted in over 25 years of lived experience across four continents. With Dutch-Indonesian heritage and deep ties to the landscapes of Indonesia, the Caribbean, Europe, and the American South, she brings a rare fusion of cultural fluency, ecological sensitivity, and strategic precision.
Arlette has led foundation work, UHNW property operations, and brand narrative design for organizations that honor the intersection of land, culture, and community. She has built programs from the ground up in places where others saw only difficulty — and found beauty, resilience, and possibility.
Bhudevi is the culmination of a life spent listening to places — and building systems that protect them. It is not a company born from a business plan. It is a calling made visible.
Begin the Conversation
Bhudevi begins with listening. We do not lead with a pitch deck. We lead with a walk through the trees, a meal from the land, a conversation about what matters.
If you share our belief that the most powerful investments protect what cannot be replaced, we would welcome the chance to talk.
